Our FoodShare Program, modeled after a program piloted by Carrboro Farmers' Market, is a joint project of Foothills Farmers' Market and the Shelby Breakfast Rotary Club. This volunteer and farmer-led program collects fresh fruits & vegetables at our Wednesday & Saturday markets in Uptown Shelby and distributes them through a network of human services
agencies in our local community. Rotarians assist our market manager in collecting, weighing, sorting and boxing all donations for distribution.
Farmers can donate their unsold foods at the end of each market day. Shoppers can make
tax-deductible donations of groceries through the “Buy One, Give One”
program. Individuals or groups may also donate cash that will be used to purchase additional foods or essential program supplies. Donations are accepted at our "FoodShare Donation Station" located under one of the market's white tents.
FoodShare combats food insecurity, fights hunger and ensures that nothing goes to
waste. It also raises awareness that local food should benefit every member of our community...not just those who can afford to buy it.
The program is fun and rewarding for all ages. If you have questions or suggestions, know about a legitimate need for food, or want to donate to the program as a part of your personal commitment to community service, contact program coordinator Lori Wellmon at (704) 482-9226 or rockbottomfarm@gmail.com.
Our promotional rack card is available here.
Since June 5, 2010, FoodShare has distributed 4,046 pounds of fresh fruits & vegetables to help feed the hungry in our community. Click here to view our distribution & volunteer schedule.
